About
Simon Ringe's creative practice is concerned with issues of subjectivity and explores the possibilities of phenomenological and somatic experience.
Ringe is at the latter stage (writing-up) of a practice-led PhD, at Leeds Beckett University, under the working title Ma – the space in-between. His research is concerned with interrogating and exploring the void, subjectively employing a without/within perspective and strategy that navigates the unknown, from a position of 'not knowing'. He has drawn on freediving and butoh training alongside a range of theoretical positions which include, amongst others, Bollnow, Levinas and Whitehead, all of which have informed and shaped his practice. He creates theoretically ambiguous works, which bilaterally explore the difficulty of communicating internal experience to an external audience. His non-hierarchical practice encompasses drawing, sculpture, film, photography and performance.
Simon Ringe (b.1965) studied Fine Art at Maidstone College or Art, (1985-88) and the Royal College of Art, (1988-90), and has been engaged in numerous roles from lecturer, Dept Head and programme leader at both undergraduate and post-grad levels in educational institutions including Coventry University, Humberside Polytechnic, Cheltenham & Gloucester College of Higher Education, the University of Lincoln, the University of Hertfordshire, Robert Gordon University (Dundee) and is presently a senior lecturer in Fine Art at Leeds Beckett University.
